Axle conversion boosts DAF LF capability for NRG Fleet Services

Contract hire and rental specialist, NRG Fleet Services, in association with axle conversion specialist, ESTEPE, has put to the road a new 16-tonne DAF LF 6x2 waste collection vehicle. The DAF LF 280 FAG rigid was originally a 4x2 unit before its conversion to DAF’s three-axle FAG configuration, courtesy of axle converters, ESTEPE, increasing its weight to 22.5 tonnes and offering a class-leading payload potential of 10-tonnes.

While the FAG ‘steer, steer, drive’ axle arrangement is a proven configuration on DAF’s heavier CF range, NRG Fleet has introduced it on DAF’s smaller LF model to provide payload and manoeuvrability benefits while at the same time providing a more environmentally acceptable size-profile for urban operations. The truck is fitted with optional five-speed Allison automatic transmission and a Geesinknorba GPM4 refuse collection body.

NRG Fleet Services operates in excess of 2000 vehicles, predominantly DAFs, through its hire and rental portfolio. This latest LF 22.5-tonner was acquired through PACCAR Financial on a five-year arrangement and is currently on an evaluation programme with a specialist waste management company, with further demonstrations scheduled with Local Authorities across the UK.

“DAF’s LF 6x2 provides a softer image in town,” said Alan Ellison, Group Sales Director at NRG Fleet Services, “It’s big enough to offer a class-leading 10-tonne payload, yet small and nimble, and certainly less obtrusive than a traditional 26-tonner – vulnerable road users and the wider public will appreciate that.”

“And from an operational point-of-view,” he said, “the vehicle offers advantages over comparable and traditionally popular models in this sector.”

The vehicle is also CLOCS compliant (Construction Logistics & Cycle Safety) and is equipped with a number of safety features, including near-side kerb-observation window, side scan technology and a new ‘Cyclear’ system designed and fitted by ISS which alerts both driver and cyclist when the two are in close proximity.

“We’re really pleased with the DAF / ESTEPE combination,” added Alan Ellison, “for urban waste collection, it strikes the optimum balance of weight and manoeuvrability. The DAF product is well proven at all weight sectors and DAF aftersales is accepted by almost all operators as the best in the industry. For us,” he said, “there’s always a DAF Dealer nearby and there’s always a DAF representative to take ownership of any issues we may have.”
